To my way of thinking, if the car is out of normal alignment, get it properly aligned.
On a Volvo 240, you have Toe In/Out alignment and a Camber alignment. However, there is no Caster adjustment. If the Upper Brace does not fit, it means that the unibody frame on the car is slightly bent, and thus throwing off your Caster. If the caster is considerably out of alignment on a 240, that probably means that it was in an accident at some point.
Anyways, the IPD instructions are correct. I have a set of Aussie upper GT braces on my 240, and the gentleman who sold them to me was kind enough to provide a drawing on how to install them. (just as was described by IPD)
God bless,
Fitz Fitzgerald.
