Lambda sond, what does it do? 200

1979 245dl with b21f

The car has a lamba sond "oxygen sensor" but the b21f also has the Bosch CIS fuel injection That is mechanical and i cant understand how the lambda sond has any effect on the injection due to it being mechanical.
Can anyone shed some light on this?
