Hot Start Problems 700 1988

Hello Gentlemen,

I found the board whilst searching for a solution to a problem with my ageing 740 Estate (wagon?).

I have a 1988 740 B230K Auto estate (220,000 Miles) which has developed a very annoying problem.

The car runs fine and cold starts without a problem - however once the car has been run and is hot from a motorway journey for example, it will not restart if it's hot. The symptoms are that moving the key to postion I, all dash lights come on, fan and radio, so there is power. Move the key to position III (start) and all you get is a 'click' and all the power goes off as if there is a dead short.

So I did some poking around the Iginition Inhibit switch with a multi-meter to try and figure out it there was a short. Whilst checking the continuity of the switch, I had the key in postion I. I ran the meter across the blue wires to see if there was any current/voltage apparent and the damn thing started to turn over!

I then thought maybe the switch was faulty (getting hot - loosing contact) so I replaced it with a real volvo one. But the fault persists. You can get the car to start by shorting the two blue wires and the it runs without any problems. This only occurs when it is hot. If you let it cool down it starts fine.

Does anybody have any ideas as to what is going on here?

Best Regards

Mick
