When we had an 1800e a few years back, I found out that the profile shape of the grille surrounds is different on the later cars than on the earlier cars. My recollection is that the profile shape may have changed either with the plastic grilles (72-73) or with the intro of the 1800e.

As to whether the newer grilles fit the older bodies and vice versa, I'll have to concede to Dave's indication that they do fit all the bodies.
