Theoretically (I believe) the socket extensions and the u-joint shouldn't cause a mechanical advantage or disadvantage, so you should be able to use a torque wrench with some degree of accuracy.... but then theory and practice tend to differ! I think it's one of those "pretty darn tight" torque specs. After I did my exhaust I checked the nuts after a hundernd miles or so. They took a bit more tightening.
I seem to remember picking up a set of socket wrench extension bars, u-joints and adapters on sale from Craftsman for $20. They've come in handy!
