I went out and removed the glove box door, then removed the left hinge (the one the spring should be on.)

Using the flat spring material I described before, I bent a spring that works very well. The problem is that I had to make a 'twist' in the middle so I could bend the spring at 90 degrees to wrap around the arm of the hinge to make it pop open.

I'll make up a rough drawing; you should be able to duplicate my work in just a couple of minutes, but try to find some fairly stiff ROUND wire to make the spring from.
