I've installed the older 204 HP rated cams in my car and didn't notice any change in what I would call "refinement". I'm guessing the major differences are associated with the versions of the ECUs. (Motronic 1.8 versus 4.4)
The engine lost torque in the lower RPM range but gained it in the upper range. I'm very happy with the extra peak HP availabe from about 3500 RPM all the way up to the WOT shift points at 6200.
