Yes, the problem seems to be confined to the speedometer indicator assembly. The problem manifested itself in less dramatic fashion last summer and seemed to get worse with the colder weather.

After getting under the dash and seeing what was involved it became clear that the only way to really diagnose the situation was to pull the instrument cluster. It was just barely possible to get a couple of fingers on the cable connection to verify that it had not become loose.

Looks like I'll soon have an opportunity to get to know my Volvo a little better.
