I find that most folks panic and shut 'er down just before the thermostat woulda opened up anyway (then ya get to start all over next time).
Funny thing about thermostats, when new, you need to "wake 'em up": about the time you think it's going to over-heat, a couple good, strong revs of the motor will wake it right up. Or, like Bob said, squeeze the top hose a few times. Perhaps try rapping on the thermo housing with the handle of a screwdriver...or any and all combinations of the three.
