Affirmative. This is also referred to as the "pumpkin" in some circles. And actually, it's been many years since a typical passenger car differential housing actually resembled a banjo. Many differentials built in the first half of the 20th century (especially with the axle housings removed and a torque tube attached to the front) looked very much like a banjo when viewed from the side... peek under a Ford Model A when you get a chance ;) you'll see the obvious resemblance.
