Following the advice to turn on the ignition and flip the switch with it in 4th, I was able to determine that it only engages in 4th.

I also took the opportunity to change the oil filter, add a mangentic oil plug, and switch out the 4 qts of oil (it was as black as pitch). I also switched my "IPD-Volvo" cast aluminum valve cover to its B20E. I added the neoprene gasket secured with that nasty-looking 3M adhesive. Hopefully the oil loss is stopped now.

1971 P1800E... Not a wagon, but it's just a donor car for the Amazon..
