idle problem...chugging & vibrating 700 1985

Sometimes there are "marks" on the distributor cap contacts that look like scrapes but they are really just created by electrical archs. The rotor should never come in physical contact with the cap. Check your distributor rotor shaft. There have been a few comments here about worn shafts that start wobbling causing rough idleing and running. You could have a dirty throttle body or leaky fuel pressure regulator. Could be dirty air filter also.
