I once had an old '65 wagon with wedge-shaped boxes in the foot-wells. They held 6" round speakers, and were relatively unobtrusive. It seemed relatively easy to make out of plywood. The previous owner made them, and covered them in black carpeting material so they were not very noticable. It's the only solution I have seen that does not involve cutting into the door panel.
