The resistor got added to the car's ignition to aid starting around the early '70's. It drops the voltage down to 9ish volts & more windings were added to the coil to make it essentially a 9 volt coil. When you crank a car over the battery drops down to 10 volts so a diode & power outlet terminal was added to the starter solenoid to supply power directly to the coil when the ignition switch is in the start position thus giving the ignition a little bit of a leg up. If you have added electronic ignition to a car with a 9 volt coil, it will still need a resistor to drop the voltage down.
