I was kicking it out of OD or 4th gear and with the clutch disengaged putting it in 1st or 2nd gear coasting up to a light or stop sign. Even though the engine was idling the transmission gears were running at full speed. Remember the drive shaft is still spinning the transmission. It was like running the transmission at 40 to 60 mph in 1st gear. It built up a large amount of heat and friction.
I didn't suggest checking the Allen screw on the shifter because I figured your mechanic would check your linkage first to make sure it was adjusted properly. BTW you can access the set screw from underneath. It holds the shifter to the linkage. The reverse detent can be accessed from the top by removing the rubber shifter boot.
