knocking sound from engine 700 1991

I concur on the exhaust leak possibility. I had one on my first Volvo, I thought it was a valve or another mechanical problem. Never consideredit could be hot air....!

Right now I've got an intake gasket leak (230FT), and it sounds like someone blowing through a blade of grass, you know, that high pitched sqealing sound?

I'd never have guessed it to be an air leak unless I'd had previous experience with the same problem.

Tightening them now probably won't help, the gasket(s) are more than likely shot.

Cheap fairly easy fix!
