If the reverse lens was taller than the turn signal lens then I could indeed grind one down to fit. Plus - the reverse lens is the only lens sold separately.

I never saw a good complete assembly on eBay, and one from the dealer is close to $200.00 !!

I did get a pair on eBay that are from a 945, but there is a difference in the lower outer lenses making them not a good fit on the 1997 965. Also, they have the yellow turn signal lens. Using them is Plan "C".

PS: I understand about the cognitive dissonance of seeing a Volvo with tape on a tail light. Rather a red-neck sort of thing (ref. to a thread in OPINONS) but, here in Texas, I hope it's easily overlooked.
