I had a similar problem. I pulled the entire tank attempting to find a solution. As it turned out, the rubber filler neck was not quite properly seated on the inlet to the tank. By stripping off all the old undercoating, replacing the clamp and re-seating the tube (there's and inner and outer part), I got the leakage stopped. It hasn't been a problem since. Well, except that I've not been driving it since it got cold and I picked up my 1800.
Anyway, it's a simple and effective fix. Mine must have been mis-seated for a very long time.
