The "different fluid" turned out to be that they used an additive to lubricate the valves. The fluid is overfilled, but I don't think that would have anything to do with this kind of misbehavior. I probably won't be able to adjust the cable until the weekend. (I work nights and go to school during the day, so any activity requiring brain function have to wait for the weekend.) Thanks for your help.
