I found I didn't need a special tool.

Before you start removing other stuff try loosening the strut nut. If it cracks loose then you can proceed with strut work else you'll need to make/acquire the tool or go to a shop which will start it for you with an impact wrench.

The nut is 15/16" and is set deep. Which would mean you need a deep socket to grab it. But you may be able to extend your regular socket's reach by placing a couple of 1/2" washers between the socket and the wrench. If the socket can then grab, next do the impact wrench thing by taking 2-1/2 lb hammer and whacking the wrench. Or place a long pipe over the handle of the wrench for extra torque. If the nut cracks loose then you are good to proceed with strut replacement.
