Can I call you Super Mario? You are absolutely correct regarding the load on the axles. I guess in my 37 years of experience, I've never noticed that. Also, since I now have a hoist and had the problem with one of the drums, I was afraid I'd damaged something. I was so curious that I just went out to my garage, put the drum back on (with my puller), held it while rotating the other axle - viola, the driveshaft turned!
Christopher, I will still take a rain cheque (I'm Canadian) on your ENV, until I confirm the differential is not damaged.
Here's a few pictures, especially the first one with the damage on the axle. The inside of the drum is similarly scored and without the key, who knows when this damage could have occurred? I understand the Swede who owned it had been working on it for 15 years prior to it being brought into Canada in 1992. Regardless of when the problem happened, it has been off the road for at least 30 years.
Thanks again Mario for your help and Christopher for the generous offer - yes, I'm within driving distance to Buffalo.
