Ignition switch or starter? 700

Hi Guys:
A week or so ago my 1990 740 GLE 16 Valve gave me a hard time starting
on a parking lot. The starter would no turn at all . After a few attempts the
car started but with a strange noise. I touched the key and the noise went away.
I noticed that the ignition switch is somehow loose. Later in the same day the same thing happened, but this time no noise after the start. Yesterday it happened for the third time. I played with the key in the ignition switch trying to start it and in the process I noticed the key sort gets stuck on position III,before it returns to II. After a few unsuccessful attempts I pushed the car by hand up my driveway, tried to start it and I was successful at the first attempt. I tried a few more times and always started.
Giving the symptons described above: Is the problem with the ignition switch (it looks that way to me) or with the starter (that noise it made the first time was kind of weird and scary, but I dont even know where it came from under the hood)?
Tks for yr advice
