Hello Mike:
The ignition module (power stage, ignition amplifier) is found on the driver's side inner fenderwell. It is held in place with 2 torx screws. I agree that troubleshooting should be done first. Have you read the OBD codes for hints?
My approach lately has been to develop a small parts stash from the pick-n-pull. I have harvested several ignition modules, radio suppression relays and alternator brush packs/regulators and put them in the glove box of each car. I have also ordered a new RPM sensor and FI relay for each car-- both of these can be show-stoppers-- I don't need that in rush hour Toronto traffic! I replaced the RPM sensor on the 945 yesterday afternoon-- it appeared to be the original yellow band sensor and it was amazing that the car still ran-- it was totally shot!
I have seen random stalling from RPM sensors, ignition modules, FI relays and radio suppression relays. All of these things are DIY-able-- everything but the RPM sensor you can swap either by hand or with a screwdriver with the right bit from the Volvo-supplied toolkit. The RPM sensor is kind of a pain to reach, but with some extensions and a u-joint for your ratchet and a 10mm socket, you can do it in less than 20 minutes. You can get all these parts for about $100 online at places like FCPgroton.com. This is not a big chunk of change, particularly if you consider that professional help is likely to add up quickly at $75-100/hr, plus the cost of parts that have been marked up for profit. A friend recently paid $250 for just an RPM sensor replacement, not including the cost of the tow!
Good luck!
