The best seperator in my humble opinion is the screw type. It does the least amount of damage. The pickle fork is bruttle. It works but the ball joint is not reuseable because the boot is typically torn. There are two sized pickle forks available at most parts stores. You have to use the larger of the two.
On the 98 I was changing out the LCA's but wasn't planning on chaniging out the ball Joints. I put the LCA's in a vice and gave it a strong wack dead straight on with a small sledgehammer......and bent the stud. Those ball joints were in to stay. I wound up replacing the ball joints as well.
On the 95, the pickle fork worked fine but I had to beat the ever lovin' out of them to release them.
As you have probably already found out, the spring only pushes down to full extension but it's not a problem
