Sorry, I don't know the first thing about a 122's electrical system, but I have encountered my share of electron thieves. What a great post subject!
Those that appear after a rain, mostly come in the form of water that has followed a path into an electrical device and filled it, such as rain being guided by a harness into a relay's housing. Sure, that pure rainwater is an insulator at first, but as it begins to dissolve the metals, the resulting ionic current grows exponentially.
Your best indicator is corrosion - usually the green stuff, but if we're talking battery connections, the white stuff. Tracking it with a meter is your first choice, but if the water leaks out or evaporates eventually, the trouble may seem to abate-- then you'll have to resort to logical guessing; trying to imagine where the water might get and inspecting.
Well, I probably haven't helped - just stated the obvious, but I did want to compliment you on a fine choice for a subject line.
