I have a B230 NonTurbo. I changed my Cam Seal and timing belt and tensioner. I had everything back on except the crank pulley & drive belts. The tensioner was placing tension on the belt,....BUT..the retaining washer and nut were loose and had not been tightened down. I left for a doctors appointment and it began to rain. My wife went out to put my tools in the trunk and roll up the windows. She tried to start the car! I returned and all was well except for the timing belt marks on the belt no longer lined up with the sprocket and block marks. The belt marks were now two teeth ahead. The sprocket to block marks still lined up. I know you have to rotate the engine twice to get the sprocket back to the same point. I wanted to know why the belt had moved (or did it?). The only thing I could attribute the movement to was the tensioner being free to compress with the nut loose. My thinking was;if the Tensioner is locked down to provide a constant tension then the marks will not change on the belt. So, I put on the crank pulley, tightened the tensioner nut and had my son crank the motor over. Every revolution the marks on the belt are different. I realize the only important thing is that the marks on the pulley and the block remain aligned. But why is the belt not staying in line with the two other marks?

Thanks,
mark h.
