The compatibility issues appear to be with dashes from cars with the knee bolster, which is the cars with SRS air bags. Our '89s don't have air bags, our '90 does. So I think that's where the cutoff is for drop-in interchangability. I don't know if there were changes in the pre-'82 period - my experience doesn't go back that far.
