Running an engine on the Engine Stand 700

Hi all:

I don't want to re-invent the wheel here. I'm sure some of you have done this, but it's new to me. And maybe to some of you. So I'd like to pass it on.

I've rebuilt quite a few engines in my lifetime. Most of them were never test run until they were installed in the car. Recently, at the suggestion of fellow memeber. I've been running them on the bench, before installion.

I considered this an excellent idea as:

(1)- I'm getting pretty old and don't want to do thing twice :-).

(2)- it turned out to be a wonderful idea, as you usually find something wrong and it's so much easier to correct on the bench.

This procedure requires removing the engine from the Engine Stand and securely mounting it to the bench. I hook up all the cooling system componants so it can be run for a lenghty time.

Well for the same reason as #(1). I said let me see if I can make this easier. I looked at the engine in the stand. It looked very stable in the back but quite flimsy in front. I said no way will I run it like that. It will probably wind up in the neighbor's yard :-(.

Well that little light came on again (It doesn't come on as often any more). I said, what if I brace it and take some weight in the front with some 2 by 4's?

I made an "A" frame with some 2 by 4's and attached it to the front of the engine at some of the accessory mounting points. I lifted the front up slightly before attachement so it would bear a load.

Well let me tell you! This thing is sturdy and it's going nowhere. The engine, on the stand is a D24T Turbo Diesel. It's heavier than a Chevy Small Block. It ran beautifully on the Engine Stand with no hint of unstability.

This saved numerous steps of unbolting it from the stand and carting it to the bench. Only to put it back on the stand if problems were found.

I you are going to try this I suggest using the 2000 lb. stand, as I did. The smaller ones look too flimsy. I've taken a picture of my setup and will gladly pass it on if interested.

Warren
