Wife.sig and I went up that route in Oct 03, the newly installed (by me) cruise control in the 1988 244 was a blessing. I-95 can be a bear. Two lanes each direction most of the way and heavily traveled. Trucks everywhere.
Take a break at the "Entering Virginia" rest stop if you get there before 5pm. Get a map or two, rest rooms are clean. I-95 thru Richmond is toll, be prepared.
Allow extra time for getting through D.C. Have your map handy. First spaghetti bowl is well-signed, but you will need to go slow enough to read them. Decide in advance whether to go around on I-495, through on I-395, or another route. Remember rush hour - bazillions of bureaucrats en route home.
Decide in advance whether to use the Baltimore-Washington parkway or I-95. If the parkway, have enough fuel. Its two-lanes, divided and landscaped, no trucks and a pleasant ride, we found it relaxing compared to I-95. Have a look at the antenna farm as you pass NSA hq. just north of Ft. Meade.
There are a number of BBers in the area, post a "Driving I-95 NC to Calais, ME. Coffee, anyone?" in the ALL RWD forum and in OPINIONS. Several in the DC area, maybe even Gary in Sumerduck, Virginia. More in CT, some in ME.
Great trip - grand car. Best luck,
Bob
