How far does the ignition advance when the engine speeds up?
It should go to about 37-40° btdc at max advance.
But the plugs should not be getting black and wet. That sort of
says either the mix is way too rich or the plugs are firing weakly
or not at all. Also having plugs that are too cold might contribute
to this situation.

How is it running under power? Does it run on all the cylinders and
have plenty of power?
