losing oil???

Well, then a compression ( wet and dry) and vacuum tests would be in order, and then try to discern from the readings if it has leaky valve seals, bad/worn piston rings/bores etc.

Pulling the head would let you know for sure.

If it has sticky/carboned rings , an Auto RX treatment has helped many folks. Using the synthetic oils, or the HDEO 15w40, would also help clean it up, and the thicker oils would also help with the valve seals.
