check engine light 200 1989

I have not driven my 1989 Volvo wagon for 2 years. Recently I took it to be serviced thinking that surely it would need some attention. The mechanic told me that it was OK to drive, but said it would be a good idea to clean the fuel system and change the oil. He did this. Car runs fine but on the way home I noticed the "check engine" light is on. I need to get the emmisions certified for my state registration, but can't as long as the check engine sign is on. Car has 100,000 miles on it and has been garaged the whole time.Any suggestions..as you can tell I don't know much aboout cars..Oh yes, I had to put a new battery in it before it would start.
