It sounds like you have the original type with the metal spiral in a plastic funnel. You cleaned the spiral and the funnel cracked when you went to put it back together. It broke because it was old and brittle, from exposure to heat and oil fumes. The solution is to get a new one, which will be all plastic, with holes in it. They aren't expensive.
