What I did to remove the pads were to punch out the 2 retaining pins and remove the spring. I guess a correction should be made in the FAQ for newbies like me?
That is exactly the way to remove the REAR pads. And IMO, adding a mount bolt removal to the FAQ pad changing procedure is certainly not called for. Especially when it appears to be based on a misguided tip.
Will740turbo seems unfamiliar with Ate rear calipers, as he doesn't know what the retaining pins are. And his tip to remove the "top guide pin" is describing a FRONT caliper procedure. There is no need to remove either of the two mounting bolts on ANY caliper when replacing pads.
Forget the C-clamp too. If you can't squeeze the pad and piston back with large adjustable (angle) pliers, remove the pad to make room for some kind of pry bar or lever, to pry directly on the piston (don't worry about the rotor). If the piston still won't move, the caliper will have to be replaced.
