Stuck in OD? 1800

I'd suspect hijinx with your solenoid.

Slowness to disengage typically means that the solenoid is sticky, probably the electrical half of it is full of oil. Failure to disengage can also be related to the o-rings on the solenoig allowing oil to leak past when it is closed.

On my cars I've always noticed that the pattern of engaging the first time, then having a delay on subsequent engagements is related to slightly low oil level.
