240 vs 740 vs 940

Have a look for a 93-95 940-- they are the most evolved of the 4 cyl "red block" Volvos.

The 940s were available with and without turbo. Maintenance costs are a bit higher, fuel consumption is significantly higher on the turbos. If maintained well, the turbo itself is not a huge maintenance concern.

In the 93 onward 940s you get r134a AC, the best B230 with oil squirters and the latest timing belt design, a locking differential, a more evolved suspension and impressive resistance to rust.

I have two wagons, a '92 245 and a '92 945. The 940 has a more sure-footed feel, is much more quiet on the road. Maintenance costs are really quite similar-- mostly relatively minor differences. It costs more to tune up the 940 because of the more expensive cam-driven distributor cap on the 940 (the cap costs almost 10x as much as one for the intermediate shaft driven 240 distributor). Turbo hoses are also very expensive, but they generally last a fairly long time. The 240 has brakes with more robust fixed calipers-- the 940 uses floating calipers on the front, which often suffer from guide pin seizures.

The 240 has developed a near cult-like following which often drives the prices up. I paid a small fortune for my 245 in 2003 after wrecking my '89 760GLE. My wife felt like the 240 was a huge step down from the 760GLE, and she clearly prefers the 945 now.

Good luck!
