Hello all... I just recently purchased a '89 740GL 5-spd with 188k on it. All things considered, the car runs great- usually.
I have been having a problem with erratic idle. When just riding around town and the car is fully warmed, it never seems to have a problem. However, when the car is coming up to temp (but not stone cold), it will stall out when decelerating with the clutch in. The idle sometimes drops below 500 rpm, the motor shakes and then it eventually stalls. I can blip the throttle to around 1.5-2k and it usually solves the problem for the moment. The other odd thing about the car's idle is that after driving on the freeway when the car is at full operating temp, the idle rises to 1,100-1,200 rpm. A throttle blip doesn't fix this, but turning the car off and restarting seems to get the idle back down to normal.
The fact that the car does idle well the majority of the time leads me to believe that the idle motor is ok. Only other thing that I can think of that may cause this is the TPS. Is there a way to check the adjustment of the TPS? The repair manual that came with the car (Haynes) doesn't seem to mention an adjustment, although I noticed that it looked adjustable when had the flame-trap and TB off for cleaning.
Thanks in advance.
