sorry, I see you did say it's a turbo. A well-maintained mid-90s B230FT would have a lot of life left in it. For example, the B230F in my 90' burns no oil between changes and has perfect compression. I bought it in '2002 and assume it received average maintenance before then. And, the FTs were built much stronger than the plain Fs in the 90s.

The risk is that you waste money installing a bad engine. So, I'd look for a reputable supplier and perform a leak-down test before dropping it in. Given what Volvo would charge for a new engine, I think it's worth taking a chance.
