That distributor should have the notch to show the alignment with #1 at TDC.
I use a small inspection mirror or makeup mirror to view the alignment of the intermediate timing mark to the tick mark on the rear cover. With that technique, this shaft is easy, though the crank can still be a challenge. I find it's best to keep the timing belt tight from cam to int shaft pulley, and tight from int shaft to crank, keeping all the slack on the tensioner side of the belt. And still check everything twice before you bolt any covers or pulleys down.
