I'm not sure that the struts are the source of the clunking you observe. It seems more like ly that the source of clunking is likely to be in the "radius rod"/control arm joint or possibly even the steering unit.
Regarding your interest in fixing it and replacing the shocks/struts, I can say that I have been very happy with the Bilstein HD strut inserts. They are an easier install than the stock Boge units as you do not need the bump stop at the top since this is incorporated in the Bilstein unit.
If you are going to fix it , then I would first evaluate the rack & pinion steering unit by tugging fore & aft firmly on the steering rods on both sides. If there is any play in these, then you will need to pull back the boots so that you can determine if its on the inside or outside. The steering rods are not too hard to replace, but if there is play in the rack/housing bushings, then you're looking at replacing the steering unit.
If you're going to do the shocks, then you'll also want to do the control rod & radius rod bushings as well since you have pretty much to take this apart anyway, and the bushings are fairly cheap. I wouldn't reccomend the IPD poly bushings for this car as they are too harsh for this suspension desing with the radius rod/body connection. I put them on my wife's '94 960 and ended up taking them out an re-doing it with the Meyle rubber bushings. They are much more comfortable and less prone to transmitting braking vibrations to the body.
If you're going to fix it, then be prepared to do it all at once. Just eliminate the steering unit as a source of the problem at the outset. Troubleshooting clunks in any front suspension can be problematic. If you don't check ALL the possibilities, you may find yourself crawling under there and taking the thing apart several times befroe you finally fix it. I did exactly this on my wife's car.
