Another possibility, especially if you are up north in the salt zone, is that the tone rings on the front hubs have gotten corroded. This changes their shape, and magnetic properties, so that they no longer send a steady signal to the control unit. If they aren't too bad they can be scraped clean, but they may need to be replaced.
