The 240 owners manual does say every 5K.

I use to change oil every 3K with filter on all my cars through the years. Been too busy to get it done every 3K recently so it has slipped to about 4-5k between changes.

By 5k the oil is looking pretty skanky though so I know I'm overdue for a change. All mechanics I've talked with through the years say 3K isn't really necessary. They seem to feel the filter is done after about 5-7K (unless using synthetic) and that it is most important to change the filter every 5K or less...

BTW - 5k has worked nicely for me. My VW was still going strong on its original engine (no engine work) at 281k with 5k oil changes when it was totalled. My 240 runs great at 271k (no engine work either) with oil changes every 3-5k. :)
