I usually use 93 as for first band (87 to 89) increase of 2 octane number there 10 cents price differential and for the next band (89-93)increase of 4 there is the same 10 cents price differential, which feels like better value for money . Car definately runs better with less pinging.
My another question is that on my 1990 manual 240 SW I can start pinging just by running it in a wrong gear i.e. run car in 3rd when 2nd is called for. Should pinging happen for such laxity or engine management should even take car of that.( Some times ,not often , one is just cought up in wrong gear).
