Tachometer Question 200 1989

These two things should not be related. But I could see, I guess, if the OD wires or other wires in the shifter shorted out due to movement of the shifter, you could blow a fuse- but then only if the key was on while you were doing this.

I take it you did not have the instrument cluster out for any reason? You may just want to reach up behind the tach and make certain the white/red wire did not come off the tach connector.

Also, not related but a possible cause, make certain your ignition switch is returning fully to the II position after starting. Ignition switches get sticky in these cars, all Volvos really, and hang up towards the Start or III position. A nudge back towards II is often all that's needed.
