i have done it in gear but stopped, usually I shift to neutral before switching modes if I am doing it on the fly.

I think the manual says do it in park, but I am not sure. The manual is in the car, and it is waiting for a 145k service at the dealer.....probably the last time it goes there, I am taking over......
