It was a motor driven speedo/odometer. I just took the motor loose and used a bamboo shish ke bob stick as a shaft attached to the gear that the motor usually turns. I picked up some extra replacement gears at the junkyard, but you can buy replacments that are better than the originals on the web (I think the address is odometergears.com)
