Friday night I got in the car ('93 245) and started it up. Noted "SRS" lamp stayed on for about 40 seconds before going out. After it went out I noted the charge, brake failure, handbrake and bulb failure lamps were all glowing dimmly.
I knew what it was right away: voltage regulator/brushes on their way out (brushes worn down). I went through this 2-3 times with my '90 245 over the course of 300K miles and swapping out the regulator assy always cured the problem. However this time there was a new twist I never noticed or remembered from previous: none of the lamps to the right of the high-beam indicator would come on for the self-test when I turned the key (except upshift lamp. This is actually a good hint that's something is wrong, especially during daylight hours because you'd never see the dim lamps during the day.
So if you're seeing any of the symptoms above, change out the regulator/brush assy as soon as possible. The unit is held on the back of the alternator with two small phillips screws. I have never been able to budge them with the alternator in the car though. I always have to remove it to get good leverage on those screws. You'll also save yourself a lot of time and agravation by just going to Volov for the replacement. Parts places tell you you need to replace the alternator, part not available etc etc. The one I took out of mine was not Bosch OEM so it must be available somewhere, but it looked to be some el-cheapo knockoff. The brushes were less than half worn but were so loose and wobbly hanging out of the holder they weren't making good contact. I was lucky: the battery was good enough to get me home. I put it on my charger and it was pretty low.
