I don't touch the pan. In fact I don't even get under the car.

I disconnect the upper trans/radiator cooler line and stick it into a clear, large diameter hose about 3-4 ft. long. I put the other end into a clear plastic container that I bought at wal-mart for 99 cents and have marked off qts in 1/4 qt. increments with a marker.

I start the engine for several seconds at a time and shoot for getting a couple of qts out at a time. No more.

I add the exact same amount back in thru a funnel that I have attached to a long stiff nylon tube that I can stick into the dipstick tube. This is the slowest part of the process.

I empty the 'calibrated' container into gallon sized jugs for recyling.

I repeat the process until fresh cherry red fluid comes out. Takes anywhere from 12-16 qts of atf. on average.

If your atf is really dirty, I reccommend flushing with dino atf (cheap) and them waiting 2-3,000 miles and flushing again. The first flush will remove more contaminants and on the second flush, you can use synthetic atf and it will stay cleaner, longer.

The above process takes me anywhere from 45-60 mins depending on how slow/fast I'm moving that day. That includes hose hook-up and cleanup.

Some folks drain and drop the pan as well. They clean the scum in the bottom of the pan and either clean or change the filter as well. Your call.
