I always try to go right from a forward gear (usually 1st, because I'm usually moving slowly when I'm about to select reverse) over into reverse relatively quickly.
But the clutch should not drag enough to make the gears crunch regularly.
If the floormat doesn't turn out to be the only problem, I'd say the clutch cable does need to be adjusted. Pretty simple adjustment under the car- you can usually see where previous mechanics have been at the nut with big slip-joint pliers.
