a cheap, beat up old 240 wagon... Or a nice one if you want to spend more than a few hudred bucks.

I gave up on daily driving the vintage stuff when I moved 10 miles up a dirt road... and 122s just don't hold up to the abuse so well. 140s a bit better, but not a lot.

I've had 12' long 2x4s in the 240 wagon with no problems. full sheets of plywood or drywall strapped to the roof...

and the car feels solid... is solid...even after 270k+ miles. and is much more comfortable than a little toyota truck. Not that the Toyotas are bad.. they're not. But like you say... they just don't have that quality feel.
